WATCH: The Real Deal’s reporters on what the industry needs to watch out for this year

(Video produced by Jhila Farzaneh and Kerry Barger)

From TRD New York: I remember blowing a deadline for an important story in journalism school and getting a (deserved) tongue-lashing from my editor. He gave me the usual shit, but ended with this gem.

“An editor in a paying newsroom would have remanded you to the real estate desk. Which is to say, made you peripheral.”

Well, here we are! On the real estate desk, but by no means peripheral: The Real Deal sees real estate as the perfect lens through which to view how money and power work in New York. Our reporters have ringside – and sometimes courtroom – seats to the blood sport of the business. Whether it’s developers with skyscraper-sized egos torpedoing each other’s projects, or investors scrambling to adjust to a market without a torrent of Chinese money, or a major landlord finally seeing the inside of a jail cell, we stay on top of it all with scoops, deal analyses, rankings, investigations and profiles.

In this video, we take you through some of the biggest things to be aware of as you kick off the new year. It’s organized into several chapters, each a discussion with the reporters who broke or were at the forefront of the story. Get some popcorn going and watch it all at once, or do it piecemeal.

(The chapters are: I. StreetEasy II. Compass III. WeWork IV. Foreign Investment V. The Investment Sales Market VI. Manafort’s real estate fixer VII. Steve Croman VIII. Harry Macklowe. You can skip to any topic you want in the YouTube playlist.)

We started 15 years ago in a beat-up Prospect Heights brownstone. We bring in 2018 in the thick of America’s largest-ever private development, Hudson Yards. Who knows where we’ll be in 15 more, but one thing’s for sure: The Real Deal will continue to give you the truth of the market, in all its glory – and all its warts.
