Los Angeles ranked sixth worldwide by number of five-star hotels, beating cities like Bangkok and Shanghai. California’s most populous city had 39 five-star hotels at the end of last year, according to a report by Knight Frank.

London took the top spot with 75 five-star hotels in 2017, followed by Dubai. New York took third place with 59 five-star hotels. Miami had 46, according to the report, cited by Forbes.

L.A.’s five-star properties include the InterContinental at the Wilshire Grand and the Ritz-Carlton in Downtown Los Angeles. President Trump stayed at the Intercontinental—the hotel with urinals that overlook the L.A. skyline — this week during his first visit to the state since he took office.

Hotel construction has been on the rise in Southern California in recent years as local and foreign investors pour money into the hospitality industry. Properties include Hotel Indigo at Metropolis, the Thompson Hotel, Park Hyatt at Oceanwide Plaza and the Godfrey Hotel. [Forbes] – Natalie Hoberman
