CBS campus advances on landmark status

The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission signed off on a plan to award historic-cultural-monument status to the CBS Television City campus, making it harder for any future owner to redevelop the site.

The plan still needs final approval from the L.A. City Council, which could come as early as next month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Should the council grant such status, any potential redevelopment or adaptive reuse would require approval from the city’s historic resource office.

The conservancy filed an application for the campus’ protection in December, just a few months after the television network put its massive campus up for sale.

Located on the corner of Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, the 25-acre campus has eight sound stages, where it produces CBS shows like the “The Price is Right,” while leasing out space to other networks’ shows, including “Dancing With The Stars” and “American Idol.”

Esteemed architect William Pereira, who was also behind the Theme Building at the Los Angeles International Airport, designed the property. This would be the first Pereira building to receive landmark status. [LAT] — Natalie Hoberman
