Stalled 21-story hotel project in Hollywood getting new life

A dormant plan for a 21-story hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood is showing its first life signs in two years.

City officials are considering plans today for R.D. Olson Development to construct a hotel at 6409 Sunset, near the corner with Cahuenga Boulevard, on the site of a Jack in the Box, according to Urbanize.

The project was first floated two years ago, when renderings of the Ivar Gardens hotel made the rounds. The plans included 275 guest rooms, an estimated 1,900 square feet of ground-floor retail and 135 parking stalls. The 232-foot tower, designed by architects Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, is intended to have Art Deco features to blend with nearby historic Hollywood buildings.

The board of CRA/LA, which took the place of L.A.’s disbanded Community Redevelopment Agency, is considering the hotel plans, which include the developer’s request for an increase in the allowable floor-area ratio. CRA/LA has authority over the Hollywood Redevelopment Area, where the hotel development would be located.

A report by R.D. Olson Development describes the proposed location as a “currently underutilized site” along Sunset Boulevard. Hollywood has become a hotbed of hotel development in recent months, including a 28-story tower with more than 200 residential units that is planned for late 2019. [Urbanize] — Laurie L. Dove
