Women-focused co-working space coming to WeHo

UPDATED, Sept. 20, 4:17 p.m.:

A co-working and networking space geared toward women is expanding to West Hollywood.

The Wing, a New York-based co-working firm backed by WeWork, provides “a home base for women on their way,” with spaces to work, network and feel like they are part of a community.

WeHo’s Wing is awaiting approval to lease 11,000 square feet on the third floor of a commercial building at 8550 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood city planners told CurbedLA.

Since opening in New York in 2016, The Wing has opened locations in Washington D.C. and San Francisco. It also plans to open outposts in Chicago, Seattle, London and Toronto.

Led by WeWork, The Wing raised $32 million in a Series B funding round last November, bringing total investment in the company to more than $42 million, Forbes reported.

The WeHo space, which is expected to open in January, will include conference space, booths, showers, and in-house cafe. The design architecture was done by Alda Ly. Wing spaces stock books only by female authors, and the company also publishes a quarterly magazine titled “No Man’s Land.”

Allison Turner, vice president of development, told CurbedLA that the West Hollywood outpost was a “direct response top the requests we received from members who were eager to have The Wing in their city.” She said the space in WeHo was selected for its outdoor terrace and open floor plan.

Fees will start at $2,350 per year, according to CurbedLA, which is comparable to the fee charged for WeWork spaces or social clubs like Soho House, which both have locations in West Hollywood already.

The co-working concept – regardless of which gender it’s geared toward – is part of a wave of shared workspaces striving to resemble social clubs from the past. [Curbed] –Greg Cornfield
