Warner Center slated to get 24k new resi units by 2033

Residents near the Warner Center in Woodland Hills are set to get thousands of new neighbors over the next decade and a half.

About 24,000 units and 28 million square feet of office and commercial space will be added to the district by 2033, according to a progress report by L.A. city planners. The Los Angeles Daily News first reported the story.

The Warner Center 2035 Specific Plan was adopted in 2013 to increase density in the 1.5-square-mile district near the 101 Freeway. The plan divides the area that some call the downtown of the San Fernando Valley into eight districts, including a high-rise commercial district.

Almost 4,600 projects have been approved since 2008. About 2,600 of them have been built, and nine are currently under construction.

The plan has been criticized for failing to deliver affordable housing. In May, Councilman Bob Blumenfield introduced a motion that requires developers to construct affordable units.

In July, LaSalle Investment spent $157 million to build a 362-unit complex at 6250 N. Canoga Avenue in the Warner Center. That was shortly after Hanover Company filed plans to build a 394-unit project at 6636 Variel Avenue, TRD reported. [LADN] — Gregory Cornfield
