Former Bel Air home of LA real estate legend Jon Douglas hits market for $63M

The “monumental house” built for brokerage founder Jon Douglas is up for grabs.

Originally built for Douglas in 2001, the eight-bedroom mansion at 300 Stone Canyon Road in Bel Air was renovated over the past nine years by spec developer Guy Hackbarth. The two-acre property is currently listed for $63 million by Coldwell Banker’s Tania Ferris, who is married to Hackbarth and co-owns the home.

Douglas is a Los Angeles legend for founding his brokerage after his plan to develop homes on the Westside with business partner Dan Emmett on the Westside wasn’t as lucrative as he’d hoped.

His firm, Jon Douglas Co., eventually merged with Prudential and, by 1997 when it was acquired by Coldwell Banker, it had almost 70 offices. That made Douglas’ brokerage one of the biggest in the country. He died in 2010.

His former home has views of the prestigious Bel-Air Country Club’s fourth fairway. It spans 15,000 square feet and comes with a library, gym, screening room, enough onsite parking for 55 cars, and a roughly 70-foot pool. Its master suite is a sprawling 3,200 square feet with his and hers offices and bathrooms, and even a sitting room. When including the guest house, the property is on the market for roughly $3,700 a foot.

In 2016, Hackbarth developed and sold a spec mansion at 10664 Bellagio Road for $34.9 million.

Ferris said her target market for the property is “somebody that’s looking for a monumental house that’s not contemporary.”

“It’s a very, very regal white brick house,” she added.
