No joke: Mel Brooks renting Malibu home for $135K per month

In some parts of the country, you could buy a nice house with $270,000. But in Malibu it’ll only get you a couple months of rent. That and a lifetime claim that comedy legend Mel Brooks was once your landlord.

The 91-year-old actor, writer, and producer has listed his longtime Malibu home for rent this July and August for $135,000 per month, according to Variety.

Brooks and his late wife, actress Anne Bancroft, bought the home in 1977 for $515,000, or around $2.2 million in 2018 dollars, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Prices in Malibu are a little higher these days. Hard Rock founder Peter Morton recently recorded the most expensive sale in all of Los Angeles County when he sold his beachfront Malibu home for $110 million last month.

Brooks’ two-story home spans nearly 3,500 square feet with four bedrooms and six bathrooms. The master bedroom stretches the entire length of the house on the second floor and includes a fireplace and a wall of windows opening to a balcony overlooking the Pacific, according to Variety.

The purchase came at a high point in their respective careers. Brooks was fresh off hits, including 1974’s “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein.” Later in 1977 he released High Anxiety. 1977 was the same year Bancroft received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in The Turning Point and a Tony Award for Leading Actress in Golda. [Variety] – Dennis Lynch
