Keyed up: Champion boosts number of hotel rooms at planned Hollywood complex

Champion founder and CEO Bob Champion

Amid a boom in hotel development in Hollywood, Champion Real Estate has changed its plan on a large mixed-use project it its building at 6220 Yucca Street.

The Los Angeles-based firm is adding more rooms to its proposed hotel while reducing the number of residential units, according to documents filed with the city.

Champion now wants to build 260 hotel rooms, 191 residential units and nearly 7,000 square feet of commercial space in the 32-story tower. It also wants to construct an additional six-story building next door.

The developer’s latest plan comes a year after it filed a proposal for a 20-story tower with 210 residential units at the site, near Capital Records.

Champion would build a four-story hotel next door that would include 136 guest rooms, along with shops and restaurants.

Also in that version, the residential portion would be fully rent-controlled. That would cap rent increases at 3 percent per year, according to the city’s rent control stabilization ordinance. Champion’s original version for the mixed-use complex envisioned a 32-story building.

Construction was expected to begin in 2019 and be completed three years later.

Champion did not respond to request for comment.

Hotel construction has been on the upswing in Hollywood — as it has for the rest of Downtown — as developers look to take advantage of the revitalizing neighborhoods. Earlier this month, Relevant Group revealed its plans for its fourth hotel in the area. The news came a few days after restaurateur Adolfo Suaya announced his plan for the Whiskey Hotel, a 134-key hotel with whiskey-themed minibars in each room.
